May 2014: Afternoon Tea with a Twist
We had an oh-so-civilised evening of Afternoon Tea this month, except instead of cake we had cupcakes… and every cupcake had a twist! We had baking regulars and some newbies, but all the entries incredibly inventive and it was a delight to taste each one. We also raised £152 for Girlguiding, so it was a great night all round! Best in Show: Jennifer’s Asian Afternoon Tea
Our baking regular Jennifer stole the show with her Asian-inspired Afternoon Tea, and her green tea macaroons were out of this world! Jennifer won the voucher for Afternoon Tea for Two at Filmore & Union.
Taste and Bakers Panel Winner: Jessie’s Topsy-Turvy Bakewell Tarts
Jessie’s imaginative twist on the Bakewell Tart won her the Bakers Panel prize (biscuit tin) and the Taste prize (tea cup moulds)!
Appearance Winner: Sophia’s Eton Mess Cupcakes
Sophia’s Eton Mess cupcakes were delightfully messy, and came complete with a sign that says ‘Let them eat cake’. And eat cake we did! Sophia won the vintage inspired cake stand.
Theme Winner: Leanne’s Cucumber and Lime cupcakes
Inspired by cucumber sandwiches, Leanne’s Cucumber & Lime cupcakes were such a good idea that they won the Theme prize. Leanne took home the Afternoon Tea recipe book.

March 2014: PS. It’s Vegan
We challenged our bakers to go vegan this month – and they pulled it out of the bag! We had seven delicious entries and each one was a triumph in vegan baking. Congratulations to all our bakers for making such yummy vegan cupcakes!
Best in Show: Jessie’s Lemon & Poppyseed Sunflowers
Our regular vegan baker Jessie won Best in Show with her lovely Lemon and Poppyseed Sunflowers, in honour of the Vegan Society’s logo! Jessie won a £20 voucher for vegetarian and vegan eatery Global Tribe Cafe.
Taste and Bakers Panel Winner: Alexis’ Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownies
The classic combination of peanut and chocolate was loved by the eaters and bakers panel – especially the hand-made peanut butter cups! Alexis came away with two prizes including the delicious cake from That Old Chestnut.
Appearance Winner: Issy and Issie’s Potty About Vegans!
Issy and Issie’s beautiful edible flowers were made from dried mango, and the cupcakes had little cherry chocolate ladybirds on top! They won the Ms Cupcake vegan recipe book.
Theme Winner: Kirsty’s Raspberry and White Chocolate cupcakes
Kirsty’s delicious tea-themed vegan cupcakes were filled with home-made jam, and topped with beautiful sugar flowers. Kirsty won the Moo Free vegan chocolate!

Feburary 2014: Valentines Day – Love it or hate it
We were spreading the cupcake love at the Adelphi on Sunday 9th Feb, as we 10 scrummy entries to our Valentines Day competition. Eight were lovey dovey Valentines cupcakes, and only 2 were on the ‘hate it’ side! Congratulations to all the bakers who once again pulled out all the stops for their cupcakes. And well done to the Eaters for polishing most of them off!
Best in Show and Bakers Panel: Rachel’s Passionate and Fruity cupcakes
Rachel’s Passionate and Fruity cupcakes were loved by the Eaters and the Bakers Panel, and as a result she won two prizes at the competition! Rachel took home the £30 voucher for Chaophraya and the heart-shaped cake molds.
Taste winner: Julie’s Strawberry Shortcake cupcakes
Congratulations to Julie who once again won the Taste prize – this time for her yummy Stawberry Shortcake cupcakes that were topped with a delicious shortcake heart! Julie won the veg box from Market Delivered.
Appearance winner: Leanne’s Strawberry & Champagne cupcakes
These pretty little Strawberry and Champagne cupcakes were topped with a strawberry carved into a rose, all carefully carved by Leanne herself! She took home the cupcake calendar, socks and I Love You cutters – very cute for Valentine’s Day!
Theme winner: Issy & Issie’s Bake Love Not War
Leeds University’s Baking Society entered their first cupcake to the competition and won the Theme prize. Made by Issy and Issie, their cupcakes Bake Love Not War won them two tickets for Leeds Roller Doll’s Cake My Day, and two tickets for a roller derby bout!
December 2013: Winter Wonderland
We started to feel all Christmassy at IronCupcake after tasting seven deliciously festive cupcakes! Thanks to everyone who came to the competition, and Merry Christmas to you all!
Best in Show: Emma’s Holiday’s Are Coming cupcakes
Congratulations to Emma who won Best in Show for her fab coca cola cupcakes! Emma took home the £20 Lakeland voucher, courtesy of Leeds Forum.
Taste winner: Julie’s Cold as Ice cupcakes
Our judges clearly thought Julie’s wintery After Eight cupcakes really hit the spot, and she won the Christmas cookie cutters and sprinkles.
Appearance winner: Jennifer’s Figgy Forest cupcakes
Jennifer’s figgy pudding cupcakes had a very pretty snowy scene, complete with a yule log! She took home the Mrs Bridges hamper of jam, marmalade and shortbread.
Theme winner: Kaz’s Gingerbread and Salted Caramel Reindeer
Congratulations to Kaz who took home Mary Berry’s Christmas Collection recipe book, after winning the theme prize for her amazing reindeer cupcakes!

Inspired by the Starbucks drink, Leanne’s Gingerbread Latte cupcakes won the Bakers Panel prize. Her gingerbread men were both very cute and very tasty!
November 2013: Baked in the USA
We had 11 delicious entries for our all-American competition and every single one was amazing! Well done to all our Bakers – you work so hard and we all really appreciate it! And thanks to all the Eaters who came down to judge too (it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it!)

Jennifer’s fantastic Supersize Me cupcakes looked just like a true American hamburger, but with a banana/chocolate/peanut butter combo! Jennifer won the £20 voucher for It Bar in Leeds where she can enjoy a proper burger!
Taste Winner: Sophia’s Tree Lime cupcakes
Taking inspiration from Florida’s key lime pie, Sophia’s Tree Lime cupcakes were tangily delicious! She took home the bumper selection of chocolate from Candy Hero.
Appearance Winner: Rebecca’s ‘Would you like fries with that?’
Burgers were very popular at IronCupcake this month, with Rebecca’s ‘Would you like fries with that’ winning the Appearance prize! The shortbread fries were particular delicious. Rebecca won the Oreo cupcake soaps from Crazy Luxuries.
Theme Winner: Jessica’s Spring Break cupcakes
Jessica’s fabulous bacon, beer and maple syrup cupcakes were complete with a Duff beer bottle from the Simpsons – you couldn’t get any more American! Jessica took home the recipe book Baked in America from the Outsider Tart.
Bakers Panel winner: Julie’s Pecan Pie
Julie’s Pecan Pie cupcakes were the Bakers Panel favourite this month – they said it was “delicious, very moist and just like pecan pie!” Julie won our spatula and whisk, and free entry to next month’s competition.

October 2013: Death by Chocolate
Thank you to everyone who came to our October competition – it was our busiest yet with 15 bakers and over 60 eaters! Our bakers pulled out all the stops to create some amazing cupcakes on the theme ‘Death by Chocolate’. Read all the results here!

September 2013: Cupcakes inspired by music
Our bakers had clearly thought long and hard about September’s theme as we had nine truly inventive entries on the theme ‘Music’! We had music eras, bands and song lyrics represented in cupcakes, and best of all they all tasted delicious. Congratulations to our winners and everyone who entered!
Best in Show: Ruth’s ‘Zombie’ by the (white chocolate) Cranberries
First-time baker at IronCupcake, Ruth’s fantastically scary cupcakes won Best in Show – the detail on her zombie hands and eyeballs was quite amazing! Ruth won the IronCupcake apron and £20 gift voucher for Arts Cafe and Restaurant.
Bakers Panel winner: Jess’ Sticky Toffee Symphony
The Bakers Panel adored Jess’ toffee flavour and smooth buttercream – the singing popping candy on top was the icing on the cake, as it were! Jess won our whisk and spatula (from the IronCupcake logo) and free entry to next month’s competition.
Taste winner: Jennifer’s Moulin Rouge cupcakes
Jennifer’s Moulin Rouge cupcakes were truly delicious – gooey chocolate and raspberry centre, with a dark chocolate sponge and raspberry buttercream. Jennifer came home with the wonderfully named ‘How to avoid a soggy bottom’ GBBO book!
Appearance winner: Jessie’s 50s Rock n Roll Coke Floats
Jessie’s retro coke float cupcakes were voted best for appearance, with polka dot cases and intricate mini vinyl records that even had tiny names! Jessie won the three icing cutters (she clearly has a knack with fondant!)
Theme winner: Donna’s Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Donna’s fantastic chilli pepper cupcakes hit the nail on the head with this month’s theme, incorporating a pretty cupcake with a pleasant chilli kick! Donna won the hamper of goodies from the Cupcake Cafe.

August 2013: Disney
The Disney theme inspired 12 fantastic entries to the competition, from Disney princesses and pirates, to poisoned apples and tentacles! The new judging system went down really well, especially with the Bakers who had five different prizes up for grabs. Thanks to everyone who came and made the night so much fun. It was great to see so many new faces too!
Best in Show: Jessie’s Ursula’s Tentacles
Winning Best in Show on her first ever IronCupcake, Jessie’s Ursula’s Tentacles Devil’s Food Cupcakes looked creepily realistic, only partly because the icing was starting to melt! Jessie won the £20 voucher for cafe Out of the Woods.
Bakers Panel and Taste Winner: Donna’s Cinderella Cupcakes
First-timer at IronCupcake Donna scooped not one but two prizes with her Cinderella Cupcakes, complete with fondant glass slipper! She was the Bakers Panel favourite – they loved the taste and texture of the sponge, and the real vanilla instead of vanilla essence. The Eaters voted her favourite for Taste, and rightly so! Donna won the Bakers Panel spatula and whisk, and John Whaite’s Bakes recipe book.
Appearance Winner: Naomi’s Aladdin’s Spiced Cupcakes
Congratulations to Naomi, yet another first-timer, whose Aladdin’s Spiced Cupcakes captured the many faces of the Genie – quite a feat! Naomi won the heart-shaped cake mould and spatula for the prize of Appearance.
Best Theme Winner: Kathryn’s Poison Apple
Kathryn continued her winning streak in August with the Snow White inspired Poison Apple Cupcakes, presented in a beautiful wicker basket alongside real apples. Kathryn won the box of 16 handmade Lovemarzipan sweets.

July 2013: The Great British Summer
We had 13 amazing entries to The Great British Summer competition on 14th July. The gorgeous weather may have inspired our Bakers, but it played havoc with our buttercream! Thanks to all the Bakers who braved baking in the heat, and all our Eaters who were probably melting too. Here’s the winners and our delicious entries.
1st Place: Lisa’s Life’s a Beach
Lisa’s beautifully intricate beach-scene cupcakes matched up to their creamy toffee taste for a winning combination. Lisa won the £30 Bibis restaurant voucher. You can read how the toffee ice cream cupcakes were created on our Recipe page!
2nd Place: Kathryn’s Raspberry Ripple cupcakes
Kathryn came away with a box of 12 cupcakes from The Box Bakery after scooping second place with her delicious raspberry ripple cupcakes – a sophisticated Mr Whippy!
3rd Place – Kirsty’s Cherry Cheesecake Cupcakes
Congratulations to Kirsty and her decedant cherry cheesecake cupcakes – a lovely summery dessert! Kirsty won the Hummingbird Bakery Cupcakes and Muffins recipe book.
